It never fails to impress me by how much the previous generations did and fought and sacrificed for WWII. The commitment of women on the home front was no laughing matter. Here is a photo from British archives showing women learning how to catch rats in the fields. They had to take over men’s work both in factories and everywhere else. Food was scarce: The United Kingdom depended on the US to send food supplies on ships but a lot of them never made it, torpedoed by German U-Boats. It was probably imperative to try to grow whatever you could and not let the rats eat it. Most women don’t like mice, let alone rats. These women had to bait traps, remove rats, plug the ground with poison for rats…there was no room to be squeamish.
